Notice of Election was published on Monday 20th March. This officially opened the election period and it is also the date that Purdah starts [the period leading up to an election, during which councils are subject to restrictions on communications activity].
The National Association of Local Councils (NALC) wants to encourage more people to stand and vote in local (parish and town) council elections and have produced a document to assist with this process: All about Local Councils, which is available in the Document Library.

Tel: 0115 9382733 REMINDER: COUNTY COUNCIL ELECTIONS GUIDANCE Pre-election period starts today! With the County Council Election due to take place on Thursday 4th May, a number of our own Councillors are likely to be standing. In light of this, we need to be particularly careful about any publicity or events we do during the pre-election period which starts today to ensure we adhere to the Code of Practice on Local Authority Publicity.
Continue to discharge normal council business e.g. events that take place annually, newsletters which are sent out regularly
,Publish factual information to counteract misleading, controversial or extreme information. It is perfectly right and proper that the Council responds, as long as it is factual. All media enquiries, as is usual practice, must be deferred to the Corporate Communications Manager immediately.
Take advice from the Corporate Communications Office or Electoral Services before arranging any proactive events during this period.
Organise any events or publicity involving any councillors, MPs or those acting as their agents. Use relevant lead officers rather than members for reactive media releases.
Launch any new consultations. Unless it is a statutory duty, don’t start any new consultations or publish report findings from consultation exercises, which could be politically sensitive.
